ELISABETH

She aimed at Serghei’s foot—he wasn’t even looking at her!—and fired one shot. She thought of shooting the cocky bastard right on his back, but it was already against the rules to shoot him from this close up. He wouldn’t even feel the shot on his shoe, so it was in some ways more satisfying.

She could only see his eyes when he spun around, but when he looked down at his shoe, his shoulders hunched. His whole body registered bitter defeat.

Then his blue eyes met her through the visor, and she saw something else there. Respect? Admiration? She smiled wide, knowing he couldn't see it.

A real man could take a loss, and it seemed Serghei was taking this one with grace.

“We’re going to lose!” He shouted, “Activate secret weapon!”

Hmph. So much for a real man.

“That’s cheating!” She said, “You’re dead! You can’t communicate with your team after you—”

He spun back around. “It’s not real combat. This is a paintball marker, you’ve only marked me, not killed me.”

Hank rushed out of a bush and blew a whistle into Serghei’s face. “That’s one warning, hotshot! Second one and you’re gone! You are eliminated and can’t give information to your team!”

A dragon roared overhead, Viktor, and Hank squinted up at it. Something fell onto the ground by his feet.

Hank picked it up, it was a paintball mask. The straps were broken.

Hank blew his whistle, “The other dragon is out for the day! He removed his safety equipment!”

“And you’ve gotta pay for this, Mr. Billionaire,” Hank said, “These masks are $39.99 a pop.”

Elisabeth rushed away from Hank and Serghei, toward the enemy team’s starting location. She wasn’t eliminated yet, and she wanted to win.

It was her go-to trick in paintball to try to get behind the other team entirely, then catch them unaware from behind. Serghei had been her only obstacle, and she could now double back behind the two bears.

She heard a huge roar, and then a rapid pop. Soon Sidd’s laugh—no, his cackle—rang out across the forest. “I’m out!” Sidd’s voice said, “Good show!”

“What the fuck!” It was Demian’s voice from the watchtower.

Elisabeth ran as fast as she could, not bothering to take a low profile or stop anywhere for cover.

She entered a clearing and saw a massive brown grizzly bear, and then a massive man—Greybear—riding on top of the other bear. Greybear had his paintball gun in one hand, and he was hunched over and holding a broken-strapped mask over the bear’s eyes. With the gun in one hand, he was firing wildly up the tower as Asher charged them toward the ladder.

The bear and gunner team was out of range for Elisabeth to hit. She needed to get closer.

“Shit!” Demian shouted down to her, “Lizzy, I’m out of ammo!”

Idiot! She thought. You don’t ever admit you’re out of ammo. He could have kept firing and at least bluffed to back her up.

A wolf—wearing paintball goggles—leapt out of a bush and head-butted Greybear.

Greybear gripped hard to Asher’s fur, but he started to lose balance and fall.
